SIWSC Novice Trial at Craigmore Game Reserve, Timaru - Sunday 5th July - Judges Neville Alexander and Dave Richardson

A very wet day but very succesful, with 8 dogs running who all got a flush and a retrieve on Pheasants, the birds held really nicely and great flushes, perhaps most common fault was missed game due I expect to poor scenting as virtually no wind and a steady rain falling, still it was encouraging to see all the novice dogs find birds, some that hadn't seen pheasants before, the winner particulaly impressed, flushing three pheasants out of one wood pile and being rock steady to all three, this was the difference to winning over the 2nd place dog. The rest of us either missed game or were unsteady to flush or shot but all had a great introduction to Natural Game Trialling.                                 Howard Halliday

MAY 2009

After a busy opening weekend for most of us on friday 8th May, a few of us North Islanders started the trip down south for the South Island Natural Game Trials.  After a night in Christchurch we arrived after a trip through snow to our Shearer's Quarters at Tekapo - we headed off for a short hunt finding a few rabbits but lots of sign and left with us thinking the rabbits were tucked up in their burrows!  Fortunately most of the snow was gone next morning and we had a few days training before heading down to Cromwell for some more training before the trials started.  The training definitely helped with the younger dogs and novice handlers and we were ready (or nearly?!) to go for the first trials at Bendigo.

2. FCh Wernffrwd Dafydd Du - Bob Whitehead

Judges David Jones (US) & Bob Whitehead

After the Championship trials we had a novice trial which was great encouragement for us newbies to the trial scene - there were plenty of rabbits in the second round which caused a few problems for some of us especially when the guns (not mentioning names!) kept missing the rabbits - poor Sonic just couldn't contain his excitment after not 1 or 2 but 4 rabbits that he was steady on were missed by the gun!!

We then headed back up to Tekapo where the weather was rather chilly and the second day we trialled with snow falling

Thanks to Rob and Keri for their hard work encouraging us novices to head down south and organising the trip, thanks to the south islanders who made us very welcome and thanks to the judges who gave us lots of positive feedback - we all had a great time and it was a wonderful learning experience for both novice handlers and dogs - i'm sure we'll be back next year.                     Rachel Ralph

MARCH 2009

The novice & open trials held at Waitotara this month seemed to go very well with 10 competitors in the novice and 9 in the open.  The standard of handling has come up out of sight since the first training day at Taupo with these guys and girls as keen as.  A few of them are now coming down south with us.   The results for the novice were Mignon Stevenson and her dog Alex 1st   Ross Wickham 2nd with Mo and in the open there was a no result as most of the dogs putting them self out on game but this showed these handlers that you can come out with no winners on the day even with game in front of your dogs - that’s natural game trials.          Rob Browning
